today is a very dreary day. it is raining outside and i am bored out of my skull!!!!!!!! yeseterday i ran two miles at garrett mountain. i have a track meet on may 11. i really need to improve. today i have to go to the doctor about my allergies. they are HORRIBLE. it is a shame because i love spring and i suffer if i go outside. but that never stops me!!! :) last night i was watching trading spouses on tv. it inspired me a lot. one family was very laid-back (a little too laid-back if you ask me), and the other was so motivated, they could not stand losing at anything. so, i was thinking about how if i ever have children how i want them to be. i don't want them really to be like either family's kids. i want them to have motivation, but know that it is okay to relax. so please post and let me know, what you think. how good children should be raised. i would like to hear your opinions.

Day To Day

Just as brushing your teeth is a daily habit, working to end child poverty can also become a life habit when it is incorporated into your day-to-day life.

Here is a list of things you can do to take action and effect change:

Organize a letter-writing campaign
Invite friends and community members to join a collective letter-writing evening. Turn on some music, set out some snacks, and make it festive. It should feel more like a party rather than a chore!

Write editorials and letters to the editor
Replace those cranky letters to the editor about parking meters with something that truly matters. If you get something published, let us know.

Organize a dinner party
There's nothing like sharing food for a cause. Whether it's a potluck or a themed affair, bring people together for some meaningful dinner conversation.

Organize a public awareness event
Help us make the campaign visible. Set up a booth at a fair or festival, or better yet, organize an event - concert, lecture series - that focuses directly on ending child poverty. Email Us and let us know what you have in mind as we may be able to help.

Meet and befriend refugee populations in your community
There's no better way to organize around an issue than by working with the people most affected. Chances are, there are people in your community that could teach you a thing or two.

Buy Fair Trade
Be sure that your actions as a consumer don't exploit children. Fair Trade: The Global Exchange

Get Children Involved
Children have a huge capacity for empathy and most kids want to change the world. Help them do it by planning car washes, lemonade stands and bake sales and donate the proceeds to the campaign.

Appeal to Companies and Corporations
Don't be shy! Companies and Corporations have a lot to give, and they can be generous. For instance, ask a retail store to donate a package of pens for every package of pens sold during the week before school starts.

Meet with your political representative
Again, don't be shy! The job of a political representative is to answer to you. Make an appointment and bring your talking points. If you're nervous, role play with a friend.

Take Initiative
Get creative and plan your own action in your community to end extreme poverty. Email Us and let us know how it went!

Add to the Discussion Board
Meet and share ideas with other campaigners through our online discussion board.

Rights of Children

Every Child

It isn't just a handful of children. Or some. Or the lucky ones. It's every child.

Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, every child has civil, cultural, economic, political and social rights. According to the convention, every child has:

* the right to survival;
* the right to develop to the fullest;
* the right to acquire a name and a nationality;
* the right to not be separated from family;
* the right to be protected from physical and mental violence, abuse and neglect;
* the right to be protected from work exploitation;
* the right to be from free discrimination;
* the right to be protected during armed conflict;
* the right to shelter;
* the right to sanitation;
* the right to education;
* the right to health care;
* the right to religious freedom;
* the right to be a part of a family and a society;
* the right to freedom of expression;
* the right to a full and decent life despite disabilities.

And every day children are denied these rights. It's not fair.

How You Can Help

-$21 will provide a meal for 560 children.
-$36 will feed 4 families for a month.
-$50 will help provide medical and nutritional aid for several malnourished children.
-$135 will provide a water pump for a village.
-$2,600 or a pledge of $174 a month for 15 months will provide a needy family with a home.

Even a little bit helps. Reach out. Help.

It's Worse Than You Think

- Every day 24,000 people die from hunger
- Every day more than 100 million children are denied the chance to go to school
- Every day 1.1 billion people have to drink polluted water
- Every day 8,200 people die due to HIV/AIDS
-Every 3 seconds somewhere in the world a child dies from poverty.

I Am Me

i've always had a shield in front of me
not showing the world who i really can be
but now that shield is disappearing into thin air
who i really am, i'm gonna share
i don't care

[chorus]
you can try to change me
you can try to make me someone else
but i am strong
you won't change a thing
cuz who i am is who i wanna be
i am me

people all around you trying to shape who you are
but they won't get far
pretending your someone else isn't fair
because the way i am is rare
i don't care

[chorus]

i don't care what people think of me
this is me

My 3 Days

sorry i didn't get to post for 3 days. i was very busy. let me give you a brief overview on the day though. first, after school i watched the oprah winfrey show. it was a special about 'going green' as in helping the environment. it was very interesting. i am definitely going to 'go green'. then i went over ayea's house to practice for the talent show. on saturday i had track practice at the stadium. i ran a mile, the 200m, the 100m, and the hurdles. i had a really great time. then when i got home i packed my bags because my sister and i were going to sleep over my aunt's house. there we went on the computer, ate, and played a card game called skip-bo. we had a lot of fun. then finally yesterday... i had a singing class. then, after the class we went to eat and then the big moment i had been waiting for... the showcase. i sang castle on a cloud from the broadway play les miserables. and i also sang my original song called i am me. my parents and gramma and sister thought i did great. they surprised me with flowers. how sweet of them!!! they were a beautiful bouquet of roses, daisies, and daffodils all dyed (and some natural) beautiful pinks, magentas, and purples. then we ate, and talked to the neighbors. i tried a portabello mushroom. it tasted exactly like steak. that is good because i am a vegetarian!

today was an average day. last night on american idol sonjaya FINALLY got out!!! america finally had some sense. it was ridiculous how long he actually satyed on. the guy has no talent, whatsoever. so today... it was not very exciting as far as i can remember. well my mom got home from the hospital today because yesterday she had to get a procedure done. it was for her heart. she is not feeling well right now. in gym today my friend who i will not name out of respect was crying. apparently one of the teachers said she was fat, a pig, and can't control her eating. and to make matters worse she told it to her whole class. so we were all comforting her and hugging her and telling her it is SO not true. because it isn't true. the girl is like a stick (in a good way). so, she told an administrator. hopefully that teacher gets fired because she has no right to say that to any students. and she has said inappropriate thigs before too. for example she has called a girl a slut. she deserves to get fired. Well anyway, we had track practice today. it was brutal. we ran around campus about 10 times. it was so exhausting. i felt like jell-o after that. i am so tired. also, fakriyh and i met a new friend named kimberly. she seems very nice. we have a practice on the track this saturday from 9:30 -11. about the shooting at virginia tech: it is so sad. i saw the video the guy filmed on the news last night. he says we have the blood on our hands, how about him!!! i offer all my sypathy to the families of the victims. i cannot not even begin to imagine how they felt. i also offer my support to the roommates of the killer. they must be having major issues right now. they probably be feeling grief, sorrow, and guilt because maybe they thought the killer was weird and never turned him in. i fell so sorry!!! that is basically it for today!!!
